3rd Quarter
Our third quarter theme is:
The Great Big World. Language Arts: Phonics: Our main focus this quarter is reading CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and learning blends and digraphs. We will continue to work on rhyming, identifying initial, middle, and end sounds of words and sight/trick words. These words will enable your child to use them in their daily writing and recognize them in early reader books that are used in the classroom. Reading: We will be reading leveled readers and challenging students to improve their reading and writing skills. We will also be retelling stories with details for comprehension as well as reading informational texts and be able to retell key details that occur in sequence (the beginning, middle and end of a story), the characters and the setting of the story. We will also be discovering similarities and differences among and between two stories (comparing and contrasting). We will continue to concentrate on identifying the elements of a story, character, setting and the key events. We will make predictions based on the cover and title of each book that we read. We will be reading expository text (factual) and students should be able to recall facts from the story we have read and answer questions based on this reading. We are learning how to compare and contrast elements of a story as well as retelling a story with details. We will also work on asking and answering questions while reading or listening to a book. Writing: We will be expanding what we have learned good writers do: Use capitals, spacing, best spelling and punctuation, and correctly forming letters. We will continue to concentrate on writing simple sentences, making sure their pictures match their words. We will be learning to write informative stories with details while continuing to reinforce sentence fluency. Math: We will continue to focus on identifying, writing, and counting numbers 0-20. We will also be learning to count by 10’s, 5’s and 2’s. We have learned that numbers can be represented in various ways such as the written number, dots/objects and tally marks. We will be working on classifying objects by attributes. We will also work on number sense. This will include identifying numbers, counting and matching objects to numbers. Also, we’ll be revisiting composing numbers (adding together) and decomposing numbers (taking a whole number and breaking it apart; i.e. 7=3+4 or 7=0+7, etc.). Social Studies: We will continue to practice the rules of the classroom and our school. We will also learn about the importance of our National holidays. We will learn the importance of Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, and George Washington. We will also learn about our National monuments, as well maps and globes. Science: We will learn about different weather and how weather affects our daily lives. We will also be learning about animals, both Arctic and Antarctic, as well as farm animals. We will learn about their habitats and how they grow up to resemble their parents. ***There are weekly character meetings to focus on showing good character as well as to learn about the 6 Traits of Good Character |
